Liberty Cemetery
Franklin County, Texas
Lat: 33° 05' 08"N, Lon: 95° 15' 06"W
Contributed by Jim Birdsong, May 19, 2003, last updated Jul 18, 2009 [james.birdsong@att.net].Total records = 238.
This cemetery is south of Mount Vernon, TX, and east of Purley TX. Mount Vernon is about 100 miles east of Dallas. From Interstate 30 at the Mount Vernon exit, go South on Texas 37 to Purley, turn east on Texas 900. The cemetery is on a rise on the north side of the road.
This listing is a transcription of a survey made by James Washington Birdsong (1913-2000) and found in his papers. Some graves are unmarked and some markers not legible. Since this survey, new graves have been added. If you have corrections or comments, please e-mail me. This information is for the free use of researchers and is not to be used commercially in any form.
Memorial Day is celebrated at Liberty on the fourth Sunday of June each year. Interested persons are invited to come. Many will arrive around ten to ten-thirty a.m., visit the graves, then go to the arbor for a brief business meeting and a memorial service that typically includes singing. Then all are invited to dinner on the grounds where families share the pot luck food they've brought, renew old acquaintances and make new ones.
The Unknown Traveler listed below was the first burial here in the 1860's.
Although the wording is a bit ambiguous, the stone notes the first person buried in what became Liberty Cemetery. The person was a stranger passing through (who happened to die, did not have his photo ID with him and was not in any fingerprint databases). The small marker is beside the north fence a few rows to the east of the road.
I have revisited this cemetery in July of 2003, using my digital camera. I am willing to share any photo which I was able to take.
