About the Cemetery
This is the site of the old mission cemetery, established by Mount Saint Michael, a mission established in 1878 as a farm to supply the Jesuit college at Gonzaga with fresh produce and dairy products, and as a respite for weary Jesuits and students. The old cemetery is still owned by the mission.
In 1916, the new Saint Michael Mission Cemetery was established on N. St. Michaels Rd, about 1,000 feet to the north.
Cemetery is in good condition and well cared for. Cemetery is fenced on three sides. There is hardly any parking. To visit cemetery you must pull off the main road as far as you can. There is a set of stairs from the road into the cemetery. There are only a few stones with names and dates on them. Most of the grave markers are wooden crosses. The medium white cross in the back left corner should be for Chief Peone. There is a sign on the right side of the cemetery listing out the names of those who are believed to be buried in this cemetery. The cemetery is no longer active. The earliest burial was 1885.
