Amos Tharp Grave
Webster County, West Virginia
Contributed by Zelma Fisher, Oct 08, 2002 [zelfish65@yahoo.com]. Total records = 1.
From Rt. 20 near Diana in Webster Co., WV, turn onto the Jumbo Rd. beside House's Store, go approx. 1 mile to bridge go straight on dirt road instead of crossing bridge. Go to head of Desert Fork, grave is in woods on left side of road; a small trail leads to grave.
Within the last couple of years a new headstone was erected at his grave. The story passed down over the years is that a group of rebels during the civil war asked him to lead them across the mountain. He and his son led them through the low gap and the rebels sent the son back and then one of the rebels shot and killed Amos Tharp.
He is buried at the site he was killed. The road is accessible by 4-wheel drive vehicle only.
This information was taken from the monument by Terry and Zelma Fisher in the month of Oct. 2002.
