Cemetery History

The West Line Street Cemetery is the older of two Pioneer District cemeteries in Bishop, Inyo County, California. Originally named the Pioneer Cemetery, it is located north of Northern Inyo Hospital, at the end of Pioneer Lane off West Line Street, one of the town's major thoroughfares.

The cemetery was established in 1868; the cemetery district in 1926. The caretaker, Lee Lee, takes impeccable care of the grounds, and is delighted to tell you the histories of many of the markers and monuments, and the people they commemorate.

Cemetery Records

The Information was compiled by Diane Mettam and Monte Williams during the summer of 2000, surveying and documenting each marker, and then auditing that information against the cemetery books to include those people interred without markers, and incorporate additional information about the deceased.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
