Total records = 2,710.
From Wallace take Nine Mile Canyon Road northeast for about a mile.
The road into the cemetery will be on the left and it is called
Cemetery Road.
Originally this was at least three separate cemeteries, the United
Cemetery, Miners Union Cemetery and
Catholic Cemetery. Each one of the original cemeteries has been
changed to be called a Section of the larger cemetery. New sections
were being added at the time I was there, because it is still
growing. It has plenty of room for growth, since they utilize
hillsides. One almost needs mountain climbing gear to read this
cemetery, and some of them made me wonder how they got up there
to bury the people.
The cemetery now is under the umbrella of the Nine Mile Cemetery
Association, Inc, which was organized in 1965, and operates under
a board of directors. Since that time the cemetery has been upgraded
with many capital improvements. They are supported by tax deductible
contributions and bequests to keep the cemetery operating. All
donations can be sent to Nine Mile Cemetery Association, PO Box
469, Wallace Idaho 83873.
The cemetery records are maintained by Dennis O'Brien at 208-752-1131.
I was able to get a copy of the records he had and add the locations
to most of the readings. If I found one in those records which
I found no stone for that means I have no photo and there usually
were no dates. I placed an * asterisk following these entries.
If the entry says photo, that means there was as photo on the
stone.
Barry Carver is hired to take care of all of the caretaking duties,
which includes all the groundskeeping duties, work days etc. Barry
has done this for many years. He told me he still does all the
digging by hand when there is a burial, which sometimes requires
a pick as well as the shovel. He keeps the whole cemetery in very
good shape. Here is a map of the area.
At present they still are trying to continue to make improvements
on it, such as get barriers up to show where the sections begin
and end. I may have some incorrect because it is most definitely
difficult to know where the line is which separates them. The
Catholic section is still in need of much renovation.
I started reading this cemetery on Aug 24, 2005 and was able
to finish it on Sep 08, 2005. I used a digital camera and have
a photo of every existing and legible stone.
