To reach this cemetery from Montreal, Quebec (Pont Champlain) Take autoroute 10 East Drive approximately 61.8 km Get off at exit 68 towards Cowansville/Sutton/ Boulevard David Bouchard/Granby, Quebec Drive 0.2 km Turn left onto Route 139 (sign for Cowansville/Sutton) Drive 12.7 km, turn right onto Chemin Mapledale Drive 1.5 km. The cemetery is located on the right.
Cemetery History
Riverside cemetery is located on Mapledale Road in Brigham. It is one of the oldest burial grounds in the municipality. The first recorded burial was of Freeman Marrs in 1831. Originally, Riverside was a family burial ground. Later, the land was given by the Mansfield family to be used by the community as a cemetery. This gift included to the land presently being used, as well as the land on the opposite side of the road to the river. Later, land on the east and north side was purchased from Frank Murphy with money donated by the granddaughter of W. F. Vilas, Mrs. Frances Sharp.
The first deed for the purchase of a lot was to Jacob Ellison on June 20, 1904 he purchased a lot measuring 51’ x 8‘ 8“ and pay $12 for it. His purchase was followed by those of D. D. Brimmer, Mrs. L. J. Woodbury and Hiram Shufelt in the same year. Although there had been many burials prior to the issuing of the first deeds, it appears that lots had not been purchased or deeds issued until this time. Riverside Cemetery is not associated with any particular religious group. Representatives from the Church of England, the Methodist Church, the Baptist Church, and the Congregational Churches were all part of the early Board Trustees.
In the 1860s the cemetery was vandalized, and some of the stones were removed to be repaired. Some were never returned.
Several of the past mayors of the Municipality are buried in Riverside cemetery. The first mayor of the Township, A.P. Hulburt is buried there as are Reuben Mansfield David Brimmer, Stephen Cameron, Frank Taber, Clark Mansfield, Philip Taber and George Cameron.
There are several veterans of the First and Second World War.
Several prominent citizens of the area are also buried in Riverside, Dr. Oliver Newell, one of the first local doctors died in the townships in 1855. Lt. Col. C. L. Hall was a member of the family of one of the earliest settlers and died in 1895. The Rev. Aaron Vilas passed away in 1895. W. F. Vilas was the founder of the Vilas furniture company.
