Cemetery History

Matahiia Cemetery is no longer active. In 2010, the Mata River swelled and eroded away some of the land from the Catholic section of the cemetery causing four bodies to wash away. In late 2010 and early 2011, the remains of 18 bodies were disinterred from Matahiia Cemetery and moved to Gisborne district cemeteries in Ruatoria, Te Puia and Taruheru. One family chose to have the remains cremated.

A member of the Boyce Family was the last recorded burial in the cemetery in 1979.

Most of the descendants of those buried in the cemetery have been contacted. The relatives of James Percy who died 11 August 1917 aged 70 and Stuart John Wilson who died aged 2 years 3 months have not been found and their remains have now been reinterred in marked graves in Ruatoria.
